PROGRAM EXPERIENCE

Foodways Class

Dr. Ann K. Ferrell's Fall 2017 Foodways class partnered with the Kentucky Folklife Program to organize two presentations on Bosnian food practices. These events were held in conjunction with Western Kentucky University's "International Year of Bosnia-Herzegovina." As a class, we coordinated two events: a demonstration on Bosnian coffee practices and another on the preparation of pita, or börek. My own contributions included advertisement, set up and clean up during demonstrations, and the securing of the Confucius Institute Kitchen specifically for the pita event.

Kentucky Crafted

In the Spring of 2017, Dr. Timothy Evans's Folklore and Education course partnered with the Kentucky Folklife Program and the Kentucky Arts Council to host a participatory exhibit at the Kentucky Crafted Market in Lexington. On the third day of the market, we hosted a variety of Mongolian centered hands-on activities in collaboration with the 2017 Featured Artist, Hong Shao, a professionally trained pipa player and Chinese musician from Nicholasville. The following year, The Kentucky Crafted Market was moved to Louisville. I returned to the market as a volunteer for "The Makings of a Master" pop-up exhibition.

Zmijanje Lesson Plan

Zmijanje is a specific technique of embroidery practiced near Mount Manjača in Bosnia-Herzegovina. In par with class requirements for Dr. Timothy Evans’s Folklore and Education class, I constructed a lesson plan on Zmijanje and led this lesson for the students at the Montessori School of Bowling Green. To see this lesson plan, visit the Work Samples page.

Horse Cave Heritage Festival

Dr. Timothy Evans's Fall 2017 Public Folklore class organized a series of narrative stages for the annual Horse Cave Heritage Festival. This narrative stage event, "Chattin' on the Porch" is produced by the Kentucky Folklife Program. In Fall of 2016, I worked as a volunteer photographer and videographer for this event. As a student the following year, I partnered with local storyteller Tracy Sue Walker to host a narrative stage about the stories she shares in her community.

Korea Through Kentucky Eyes: "Korea Through the Kitchen"

The Spring 2017 Museum Procedures Class led by Dr. Michael Ann Williams conceptualized, constructed, and installed the Korea Through Kentucky Eyes exhibit in the Kentucky Museum. My own responsibilities included writing labels and collecting (or creating) items for the "Korea through the Kitchen" section of the exhibit. One of my larger goals was to include an interactive component of the exhibit so that visitors could engage and participate in the exhibition beyond its opening day. For more photos of my contributions to this project, please visit the Gallery page.
